Zones of regulation

This week we have introduced the 'Zones of Regulation' to the tamariki. We talked about the different zones and what they mean. We also discussed emotions and reading facial expressions.

The zones of regulation will help tamariki develop self regulation skills. They will be able to identify what "zone" they are in and use strategies to stay or move into a different zone.

You can support at home by:

Using the Zones language with your child. For example, “This is really frustrating me and making me go into the Yellow Zone. I need to use a tool to calm down. I will take some deep breaths

  • Help your child gain awareness of their zones and feelings by pointing out your observations.
  • Help your child become comfortable using the language to communicate their feelings and needs.
  • Validate what zone your child is in and help them brainstorm ways to self-regulate.
  • It is important to note that everyone experiences all of the zones—the Red and Yellow Zones are not the “bad” or “naughty” zones. All of the zones are expected at one time or another. The Zones of Regulation is intended to be neutral and not communicate judgment.
  • Attached is a Zones chart that you could use at home.
